Serendipity reconnects old friends through Ocean Dreaming Ocean Atmos mix
Ocean Dreaming Ocean is the latest release by cellists David Darling (1943-2021) and Hans Christian on Curve Blue Records. This “ethereal collaboration” features the virtuosic playing by both cellists on eight ambient melodic compositions, with a new Atmos mix now available for the title track, created by Hans’ longtime friend John Loose, director of Audio Production at Dolby.
John and Hans first met in San Francisco in the early 1990s when they started to collaborate on various recording projects. John’s expert hand percussion skills provided a great rhythmic addition to Hans’ melodic ideas. As time went by, John started to work at Dolby, eventually rising to the position of Director of Audio Production, while Hans continued as an independent musician and producer.
Fast forward to 2023. Hans had just finished the release of Ocean Dreaming Ocean when he had the idea of contacting John to see if he would be interested to create an Atmos mix of the title track. A conversation revealed that John actually personally knew David Darling and his former band leader Paul Winter who was a live-long friend of the Loose family. The chance to create an Atmos mix of the title track was a nice opportunity for John to pay homage to David Darling’s amazing musical spirit. John calls it a “natural connection” to have had the chance to create this beautiful mix, with whale sounds swimming around the audio field, birds singing overhead, and well-crafted three dimensional reverbs that open up new depths for the listener to experience.
The serendipity of the connections between John, Hans, David, and Paul is a complete celebration of friendship and creativity. Check out the Atmos mix of Ocean Dreaming Ocean (title track) on your favored Atmos-enabled streaming platform.
